Barcelona Race Report - 6th / 7th May 2006 Nine intrepid Otters and supporters spent a long weekend in Barcelona under the pretence of swimming in the Open Catalan Masters competition. The swimming itself took place on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, but the majority of us felt that it was important to arrive a couple of days early to acclimatise to the balmy temperatures (20+ degrees and sunny – perfect) and get over the jet lag (that lost hour can make a huge difference). So, a couple of days were spent touring the Gothic areas, impressive cathedral, Gaudi’s various buildings, and the 1992 Olympic park. The pool facilities were fantastic. A sliding roof meant that we were able to bask in the sunshine, whilst admiring the pool. And you’ve got to hand it to the Spanish – rattles, whistles and foghorns made for a great atmosphere. Everyone came away with at least one swim they were happy with. The highlights included Alex Starling picking up a bronze for his 100fc in his first masters event, and Matt Staines completing another superb 75m fc. Also, Fiona Marshall and Mike Wake went home with a couple of impressive trophies for their swims which recorded the highest number of FINA points (Fiona as the overall female winner with her 50 br, and Mike for his age group with his 100 fc). And, thanks to the numerous official photographers we had on poolside, everyone has now had their dive comprehensively critiqued; all very informative! The small, but perfectly formed, Otter team of 7 swimmers came home with 16 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals. An excellent result! |
